Community-Driven Ontology Evolution: Gene Ontology Case Study

چکیده

Communities on the Web capture, represent, and evolve their knowledge using ontologies, either explicitly or implicitly. The Gene Ontology project is a typical and advanced case study of a community-driven ontology creation and evolution. We use this case study to derive and illustrate factors that limit dynamic knowledge sharing in community environments. Specifically, we analyze ontology evolution implemented by the Gene Ontology community over the period of five years, as well as the used infrastructures for knowledge management. We observe limitations of communication practices within community-driven ontology construction, the lack of correlation between requested and actual changes in the ontology, and propose social and technical guidelines for making ontology-based knowledge sharing and evolution more responsive to users’ needs.

A Framework towards Sustaining Scalable Community- Driven Ontology Engineering

Expert driven ontology engineering is limited by the lack of community control over ontology evolution and the amount of time and cost that is required to build the ontology. Thus, community-driven ontology engineering has been sought after as a solution. Existing solutions focus on simplifying the engineering processes into communityunderstandable actions (e.g. game actions). However, the user...

Towards Community-Based Evolution of Knowledge-Intensive Systems

This article wants to address the need for a research effort and framework that studies and embraces the novel, difficult but crucial issues of adaptation of knowledge resources to their respective user communities, and vice versa, as a fundamental property within knowledge-intensive internet systems. Through a deep understanding of real-time, community-driven evolution of so-called ontologies,...

Management of dynamic knowledge

Purpose: This paper presents a framework for ontology evolution tailored to Digital Libraries, which makes use of two different sources for change detection and propagation, the usage of ontologies by users and the changes of available data. Approach: After presenting the logical architecture of the evolution framework, we first illustrate how to deal with usage-driven changes, that is changes ...

Collaborative Ontology Evolution and Data Quality - An Empirical Analysis

Since more than a decade, theoretical research on ontology evolution has been published in literature and frameworks for managing ontology changes have been developed. However, there are less studies that analyze widely used ontologies developed in a collaborative manner to understand community-driven ontology evolution in practice. In this paper, we perform an empirical analysis on how four we...

Lightweight Community-Driven Ontology Evolution

Only few well-maintained domain ontologies can be found on the Web. The likely reasons for the lack of useful domain ontologies include that (1) informal means to convey intended meaning more efficiently are used for ontology specification only to a very limited extent, (2) many relevant domains of discourse show a substantial degree of conceptual dynamics, (3) ontology representation languages...
